Specimen data for ACANTHITE     Ag2S

Tom Mortimer catalog number:  u354

Identification method:  Reference the article "Mascot Musings" by Bob Janules in the Micromounters of New England Newsletter, October 2003, (No. 249).
The EDS plot below is of a similar specimen from the Mascot Mine. Although this plot is from a qualitative analysis, it is the best reproducible data known to the author. The plot may be useful as a comparative reference for future analysis of specimens from this locality.

Acanthite EDS plot

Notes: The display specimen is similar to others found. This mineral forms on or near wire silver within Siderite vugs. These Acanthite crystals appear and grow over time. The author's recollection is that this specimen contained no visible Acanthite, only wire Silver, when first mounted. Now the silver wires are hidden by the Acanthite. Under these circumstances, this Acanthite occurrence would be "post mining" and thus not meet the formal definition of a mineral, as it fails the "naturally occurring" test.
